Federal agencies in final stages of implementing zero-trust architecture, with continued progress expected beyond the September 30 deadline.
According to Federal CIO Clare Martorana, the White House is nearing full implementation of zero-trust security across federal agencies as the September 30 deadline approaches. At the Billington Cybersecurity Summit, Martorana stated that the 24 CFO Act agencies are in the “high 90%” range for completing basic elements of zero-trust architecture, with federal entities improving overall from 81 percent to 87 percent completion.
“For every agency, it is a journey, it is not a destination,” Martorana said. “You don’t get to a place called zero trust and it’s unicorns and rainbows. It is a journey that we have to be on and that also requires consistent funding.”
Martorana also highlighted the role of the Technology Modernization Fund (TMF), with 83 percent of its investments going toward cybersecurity and supporting zero-trust efforts. She noted that the General Services Administration was one of three agencies that have taken the lead in implementing zero-trust measures, despite facing challenges from outdated IT systems.
